NR #1996-008: Bavinck Eschatology Translation Completed, Sent to Publisher

The Dutch Reformed Translation Society has announced the completion of its
first sponsored translation project. The 251-page (plus introduction and
bibliography) manuscript translation of Dr. Herman Bavinck's "Over de Laatste
Dingen" (trans: "On the Last Things"), the eleventh and last chapter of his
Gereformeerde Dogmatiek (trans: "Reformed Dogmatics"), was delivered to the
publisher, Baker Book House of Grand Rapids, in September. Tentative
publication date is spring of 1996. Dr. Herman Bavinck (1854-1921) was a
contemporary and close associate of Abraham Kuyper. His work was relied upon
substantially by later theologians Louis Berkhof and G.C. Berkouwer. This
translation, an $80,000 project, will be the first complete translation of
Bavinck's systematic theology.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (January 13, 1996) URNS - The Dutch Reformed Translation
Society has announced the completion of its first sponsored translation
project. The 251-page (plus introduction and bibliography) manuscript
translation of Dr. Herman Bavinck's "Over de Laatste Dingen" (trans: "On the
Last Things"), the eleventh and last chapter of his Gereformeerde Dogmatiek
(trans: "Reformed Dogmatics"), was delivered to the publisher, Baker Book
House of Grand Rapids, in September. Tentative publication date is spring of
1996.

This translation was done by veteran translator John Vriend; Dr. John Bolt
served as editor. Bavinck's three major divisions - the intermediate state,
the return of Christ, and the consummation - have been retained but the work
has been divided further into seven chapters as well as chapter subsections.
Another new feature is the synopsis that precedes each chapter. The seven
chapter titles are as follows: 1) the question of immortality; 2) death: then
what? the Christian debate; 3) in the intermediate state; 4) visions of the
end; chiliasm; 5) Israel, the millenium, and Christ's return; 6) the day of
the Lord; 7) the new creation.

The published work will also feature updated and standardized footnotes, a
complete bibliography, and extensive editor's introduction to Bavinck's
thought and significance, and an appendix crossreferencing the translated
work with the Dutch original. When the entire four-volume set is available,
the English translation will be the definitive edition of Bavinck's
Dogmatiek.

At its meeting on September 12, 1995, the DRTS board decided to translate
chapter 5, on "Creation and Providence," of the Gereformeerde Dogmatiek as
the next section to be published. The board requires an additional $10,000 to
begin this work.
